Düsseldorf/Frankfurt am Main/São Paulo, May 8th, 2014. Braskem, the largest petrochemical company in the Americas, will participate in Interpack, a trade fair that, from May 8 to 14, will gather in Düsseldorf, Germany a wide range of packaging-industry participants from all over the world. Visitors will be introduced to the Company’s Green Plastic, which, with the start of its production in September 2010, has made Braskem the world's largest biopolymer producer and a reference in the segment.
Marketed under the brand “I’m greenTM," Green Plastic is a polyethylene made from sugarcane ethanol, a 100% renewable material, and is present in the products of some of the leading brands in the food, beverage, cosmetics, personal care and home care industries. Its use demonstrates design innovation, a focus on product lifecycles and concrete actions toward sustainable development.
Braskem's renewable materials portfolio offers high density polyethylene (HDPE) and linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE) as options for use in rigid and flexible packaging, caps, bags as well as other applications. In January 2014, the family of low-density polyethylene (LDPE) was added to the product portfolio, effectively covering additional applications in packaging and films. To serve its clients, the Company has local partners in various regions of the world that provide support for the development of new applications and to ensure the high quality of the final product.
“Interpack is a great opportunity to show this innovation to the packaging market, which is increasingly seeking sustainable solutions in partnership with the various links of the chain. Our portfolio of Green Polyethylene solutions efficiently meets the needs of our clients,” said Alexandre Elias, director of Renewable Chemicals at Braskem.
During the trade fair, Braskem’s stand will showcase some of the possible applications of I'm greenTM polyethylene. One of these is the packaging used by the brand Ecover, which will be displayed throughout the stand's architecture. Ecover packaging is not only made from a renewable material, but is also recyclable in existing streams used by conventional fossil-based polyethylene without causing contamination. Another unprecedented use of the material can be seen in the Select® Bio alternative wine closures made by Nomacorc, which present the same oxygen management performance as the conventional line, and prevent deterioration and waste caused by processes such as oxidation and reduction.
“The use of Braskem’s green polyethylene made from sugarcane gave us the materials we needed to offer our customers carbon-neutral corks, which not only helps guarantee the consistency and quality of the wines, but also supports the development of a more sustainable packaging solution,” explained dr. Olav Aagaard, Principal Scientist at Nomacorc.
The advantage of Braskem’s biopolymer is that it captures 2.15 kilograms of CO2 for every kilogram of Green Plastic produced and that 80% of the energy consumed in its production process comes from renewable sources. These data are based on an unprecedented study conducted by Braskem with the support of consultancies specializing in Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), in which ethanol suppliers and Brazilian and international experts participated. The LCA was conducted in accordance with ABNT standard ISO14040 and was validated by a panel of specialists who were charged with reviewing the work.
The study released earlier this year marked the conclusion of an important step in assessing the product. This gives Braskem an important tool for providing its clients with relevant information for their decision-making process and the development of products that offer new attributes related to sustainability.
